Vocalist Caroline Manins performs a snapshot of her current work which straddles both jazz and historical music performance practices. Her current Doctoral research explores ways in which mediaeval music and jazz music can creatively interact. Her study involves the analysis and interpretation of ornamental neumes in manuscripts such as the Reisencodex of Hildegard von Bingen, as well as Eastern influences in the music of Iberia.
The music generated is a synthesis of medieval song, traditional songs transmitted through oral tradition, and contemporary jazz music in a bed of subtle improvisations.
